The Chinese artist discusses his piece Mongolism, shown at the 18th Festival. According to him, the video sets out to combine elements that could investigate how youth behaves in his country. He reveals his influences, ranging from Chinese soap operas – often featuring cross-dressing – to traditional thinking in his country, which he believes still holds sway over the interpretation of contemporary Chinese living. He addresses the Chinese policy of urbanizing the countryside, and how his video tackles it through color and texture, recovered from his memories in China’s inland.
